School spirit lagging? At Villa Park High School, enthusiastic students can win Spartan spirit bucks by cheering at assemblies and games, participating in spirit competitions, wearing Spartan paraphernalia and taking part in spirit weeks, the student newspaper, the Oracle, reports.

The bucks can be used at periodic auctions for gift certificates, movie passes, tapes, videos and food.

The ASB is encouraged by the results, but reaction has been mixed. “I don’t think you should have to bribe people to be spirited,” said one student. “It’s kind of sad that we have to reward students for showing spirit, but it’s working,” said another. “There are not enough opportunities to earn spirit bucks,” complains another.
