GIRLS’ SWIMMING AND DIVING ’94 / Six Teams to Watch : Irvine
- Share via
Coach: Scott Hinman (ninth year).
1993: Sea View League champion; third at Division II championship meet.
Key returners: Taryn Beard, Sr.; Lauren Henne, Jr.; Alice Huszcz, Jr.; Monica Huszcz, Sr.; Melissa Lloyd, So., diving; Wendy O’Brien, Jr.; Molly Zak, Jr.
Key newcomers: Amy Aldinger, Fr.; Lana Kraus, Fr.; Erin Rollins, Fr.; Debbie Wold, Fr.
Outlook: Irvine was impressive in its Sea View League debut last year, winning the title. This season, “barring disaster, we’ll win, place or show,” Hinman said in reference to the team’s chances in league and at the section meet. Irvine boasts only one senior, Monica Huszcz, and the Vaqueros lack the power-packed names, but they can creep up on you. Their relays are lethal. Irvine finished second in the 400-yard free relay and seventh in the 200 medley and return three swimmers from each. Traditionally, Irvine has faltered in qualifying individuals for the championship meet, but Hinman believes that’s a problem of the past.
