Thomas McCartin; Ex-Times Mirror Official

Thomas Ronald McCartin, former publisher of the Dallas Times Herald and executive of Times Mirror Co., has died in Dallas. He was 59.
McCartin died Sunday of heart disease, hours before a fund-raising dinner he had organized to benefit restoration of Vatican artworks. The Vatican was a client of the marketing company he operated.
McCartin was publisher of the now-defunct Dallas paper from 1981 to 1983 when it was owned by Times Mirror. Under his tenure, the Times Herald won two Pulitzer Prizes.
McCartin served as president and chief executive director of Times Mirror National Marketing in New York. He had worked for the Washington Post and Los Angeles Times, and owned a weekly newspaper.
