LILLEHAMMER, Norway — U.S. bobsled Coach Joey Kilburn wasn’t specifically addressing the failed attempt to replace Randy Jones with Jeff Woodard as the pusher on Brian Shimer’s two-man sled, but he said there is a need to change the rules that thwarted the move.
“Look at the number of sports where the coach has the discretion to make a move in the best interest of the team,” he said. “Right now, we’re handcuffed. We can’t make a change unless there’s an injury or the athlete agrees to step down.
“We need to emphasize to the board of the federation and the USOC that we need to have that leeway. We should be able to make a change based on hard facts.”
