Under hail, rain and eventually sunshine, Edison took control early and upset top-seeded Simi Valley Royal, 4-2, in the first round of the Southern Section Division I boys’ soccer playoffs Friday at Royal High.
“The clouds opened up and the sun started to shine on Edison’s side at the end of the game,’ Charger Coach Mike DiGiovanni said. “I guess you couldn’t ask for a better sign than that.”
Phil Urkov’s three goals and strong team defense were the keys. Brett Jorgenson added the fourth goal for Edison (19-5-1), Beau Barnhart had two assists and Roy Ludt had four saves.
Royal’s goals came on a penalty kick and a free kick.
