San Onofre Suit

* I am puzzled by your reporter’s assertion that the nuclear energy industry is concerned that a victory for the plaintiff in a suit against owners of the San Onofre nuclear plant would lead to “an avalanche” of similar suits against other utilities (Feb. 9). As far as I can tell, no one in the industry supports that view.
Rung C. Tang’s suit against San Onofre is not the first time a worker has claimed radiation-related damages, and regardless of the outcome of her second trial, we don’t expect it will be the last such litigation.
What we in the industry have said is this: The strict safety precautions nuclear plants take against worker exposure to radiation are based on good science and good medicine. They protect our workers and keep exposure levels well below government standards--on average, at about a third of the exposure an airline crew would receive after a year of flights between New York and Tokyo.
