SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — The wreckage of a small plane believed to have flown out of Orange County was found in rugged mountains near here early Monday, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department said.
Rescue crews reached the crash site and recovered the body of the pilot, who was alone in the craft.
The victim’s name was withheld pending positive identification.
Orange County deputies said they had received similar information but were waiting for fingerprint confirmation of the man’s identity.
El Dorado County Sheriff’s Sgt. Steve Stroot said the four-seater Cherokee went down Sunday in the Tucker Flat area near the El Dorado-Alpine County line.
The crash occurred in heavily wooded terrain shortly after takeoff at 3:51 p.m. from South Lake Tahoe Airport.
