Ideas for a Lovely Valentine

With Valentine’s Day just four days off, it’s time to remember the words of English poet John Donne: “More than kisses, letters mingle souls.”
But then, so does a good night on the town. Here are a few suggestions to help you celebrate the weekend--and Valentine’s Day itself--with someone special.
Weather permitting, Saturday could be spent walking along the beach. Stroll down the Venice boardwalk or along the Santa Monica Pier in the afternoon. Pack a picnic dinner and watch the sunset.
On Sunday, head to the Jazz Bakery in Culver City, where Judy Wolman will lead a special Valentine’s edition of “Sing! Sing! Sing!,” a program of accompanied group singing. It starts at 4 p.m. and will feature such love songs as “My Funny Valentine,” “I Wish I Were in Love Again” and “You Gotta Have Heart.” Tickets are $10.
On Monday evening, Fama Restaurant will offer a special Valentine’s menu created by chef Donna Insalocco. Fama’s bargain three-course menu ($25) gives you first-course choices such as prosciutto and Parmesan-filled ravioli or a salad with goat cheese toast and tarragon vinaigrette. Entrees include rack of lamb served with potato gratin and grilled halibut with black-bean sauce. Top off the meal with a piece of passion-fruit cheesecake or flour-less chocolate cake.
And for a late-night cup of Java, head up to Anastasia’s Asylum at 1028 Wilshire Blvd. in Santa Monica. The shop pours coffees, herbal teas and more. Prices range from $1.35 to $3. On Valentine’s Day, the shop will feature live music from 8 p.m. to midnight.
