BEVERLY HILLS: City officials decided this week to move up plans to demolish and replace the aging Coldwater Reservoir, which was slightly damaged in last month’s earthquake.
Although water quality has not been affected by the quake-related cracks in the concrete, the temblor “made us aware of the fact that we need to go forward full speed ahead” with the project, city engineer Dave Gustavson said this week.
Built in 1927, the underground 7.7-million-gallon reservoir on Beverly Drive is one of 10 water storage facilities owned by the city. The Coldwater facility serves the civic center and business district. The City Council on Tuesday decided to close the two-acre portion of Coldwater Canyon Park above the reservoir due to the damage.
A running track will be taken out of service, but picnic and other facilities at the 5 1/2-acre park will remain open, park officials said.
The city hopes to begin work on the $6.5-million reservoir project this summer, Gustavson said. The city will first build a 2.4-million gallon supplemental reservoir on nearby city property on Woodland Drive, and then begin demolition work on the Coldwater Reservoir early next year, he said. Water delivery to the business district and civic center will not be affected during construction, which is expected to take about three years.
WEST HOLLYWOOD: Officials have scheduled a meeting Tuesday to unveil preliminary plans for the renovation of Plummer Park. The plans include a new community center, parking and tennis courts. The meeting, which had been postponed because of the earthquake, will be at 6:30 p.m. in the park’s Fiesta Hall.
