Olympian Heads Field for Redondo 10K

Brian Abshire, who won the 1988 U.S. Olympic steeplechase trials, is among the standouts in the men’s field and Marisol Cossio, a four-time Bolivian national cross-country champion, is expected to finish high among the women in the 16th annual Redondo Beach Super Bowl 10K today. The race begins at 8 a.m. on Beryl Street near Harbor Drive.

The men’s division also features Brad Hawthorne, five-time winner of the Big Sur marathon and three-time participant in the U.S. Olympic marathon trials, and Ivan Huff, who placed third at last year’s Redondo Beach Super Bowl 10K.

The women’s division also includes Ethiopia’s Emebet Shiferaw, who was 11th in the 1992 World Cross-Country championships.

In conjunction with the event, there also will be men’s and women’s mile races, beginning at 7:15 a.m., on Hermosa Avenue at 8th Street in Hermosa Beach. The men’s mile features Jeff Atkinson, who won the 1,500 meters in the 1988 U.S. Olympic trials, and Brazil’s Edgar DeOliveiria, the defending Redondo Beach Super Bowl mile champion. The women’s mile features Claudette Groenendaal, the third-fastest American woman in the 1,500 meters in 1993 with a time of 4:10.

The event also includes a wheelchair race, beginning at 7:45 a.m., a baby buggy race, beginning at 7:50 a.m., and a 5K walk, at 8:10 a.m.
