Foltz Wins Newport Classic in Playoff
Jerry Foltz, a Nike Tour pro from Phoenix, birdied the first hole of a three-way playoff to win the 20th Taco Bell Newport Classic pro-am golf tournament Saturday at the Newport Beach Country Club.
Foltz’s three on the 339-yard par-four first hole was one better than Paul Stankowski of El Paso, Tex., and Sonny Skinner of Sylvester, Ga., and gave Foltz the $13,000 first prize from the purse of $70,000.
The three finished two rounds tied at six-under-par 136. Foltz shot a four-under 67 and Skinner a 69 to catch Stankowski, the first leader who ballooned to a 72 after an opening 64.
Three teams tied for the pro-am championship at 14-under 128: Foltz and Jim Glidewell of Newport Beach; Jeff Coston of Orlando, Fla., and Buz Knyal of Los Angeles, and Stankowski and John Jester of Mercer Island, Wash.
