No Fall From Grace as Horse Comes Back
AYR, Scotland — Approaching the second-to-last jump in a steeplechase race here Saturday, favored Killula Chief fell, losing the lead and sending jockey Mark Dwyer to the turf.
Keith Davies, riding Concert Paper, then took what proved to be short-lived lead.
Dwyer, who had managed to hold onto the reins, was quickly back on board his mount, although with his feet still out of the stirrups.
After clearing the final fence, Dwyer rode Killula Chief to a 2 1/2-length victory amid tremendous cheers from the crowd.
Said Dwyer: “Funnily enough, going to the (second-to-last jump) so far in front, I was thinking to myself that I probably had time to fall and still win. Lo and behold, that’s exactly what goes and happens!”
