Nation IN BRIEF : FLORIDA : 56 Haitians Seized in Bid for Asylum
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
The Coast Guard brought ashore 56 Haitians seeking political asylum after intercepting their wooden boat off Miami Beach, a spokesman said. The Haitians were turned over to the Immigration and Naturalization Service and are expected to be held at an immigration detention center pending a ruling on their political asylum claims. The 60-foot vessel was only 150 yards off the beach before dawn when hotel guests saw a rowboat full of Haitians heading for shore.
