HUNTINGTON PARK : East L.A. College to Open Satellite
The grand opening of the local East Los Angeles College satellite will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at the Pacific Bell building, 2677 Zoe Ave.
“Many of the Southeast cities have similar problems which include overcrowded schools, a high level of uneducated residents, high unemployment and increased gang activity,” said Assemblywoman Martha Escutia, (D-Huntington Park).
The Southeast Annex will provide area residents with opportunities for higher education and competitiveness in the job market, she said.
Classes began at the satellite on Jan. 18. More than 800 students have enrolled, said Silvia Hernandez, administrative assistant to Escutia.
There is still time to register for classes at the new location.
The Huntington Park campus, suggested by Mayor Ric Loya five months ago, offers 45 courses including classes in accounting, business, child development, health, mathematics, real estate, political science and Spanish.
Classes cost $13 per credit and most credits can be transferred to four-year state schools.
