Earthquake: The Long Road Back : A Post-Quake Shopping Guide

Some San Fernando Valley shopping malls sustained major damage during the recent earthquake, most notably the Northridge Fashion Center. But many stores in the Valley area remain entirely or partially open. Here’s an update on shopping malls in the Valley region: Antelope Valley Mall
1233 W. Avenue P, Palmdale

Stores: 110.
Department stores: Gottschalks, Sears, Harris, Mervyn’s, JC Penney.
Damage: None.
Status: All stores open.
Burbank Media City Center
201 E. Magnolia Blvd., Burbank
(818) 566-8617
Stores: 85.
Department stores: Bullock’s, Mervyn’s, Sears, Lechters.
Damage: Broken windows, water damage.
Status: Bullock’s, Mervyn’s open. Sears will open today. Entrance near Bullock’s still closed. Lechters closed, will reopen in one week.
Fallbrook Mall

Stores: 118.
Department stores: Mervyn’s, Target, Sears, JC Penney Outlet, Ross Dress for Less.
Damage: Moderate structural damage in department stores, water damage to mall.
Status: Target is open. JC Penney, Mervyn’s and Ross will open in two or three weeks. Sears closed indefinitely. All other stores open except 12 closest to the entrance of Mervyn’s and Sears. They are expected to open next week.
Fashion Square Sherman Oaks

Department stores: Broadway, Bullock’s
Damage: Slight damage to mall. Elevators, escalators not working. Severe structural damage at Bullock’s. Moderate damage at Broadway.
Status: Mall will remain closed for the next few weeks, longer for department stores.
Glendale Galleria

Department stores: The Broadway, Nordstrom, Robinsons-May, JC Penney, Mervyn’s.
Damage: Windows broken, merchandise scattered, isolated water damage.
Status: All stores are open.
Laurel Plaza

Department store: Robinsons-May.
Damage: Estimate unavailable.
Status: Mall closed until Feb. 21.
Northridge Fashion Center
9301 Tampa Avenue, Northridge

Department stores: Two Robinsons-Mays, Sears, JC Penney, Broadway, Bullock’s.
Damage: Bullock’s to be demolished. Severe structural damage to other department stores. Cosmetic damage to mall.
Status: Mall will open in three to six months, unknown when Bullock’s will reopen.
Panorama Mall

Department store: Broadway.
Damage: Broadway closed due to moderate structural damage.
Status: Mall open. Unknown when Broadway will reopen.
Promenade at Woodland Hills

Department stores: I Magnin, Bullock’s, Saks Fifth Avenue.
Damage: Moderate structural damage to the three department stores. Broken glass and damaged merchandise throughout mall.
Status: Eighty percent of stores now open. I Magnin closed, unknown when it will reopen. Saks Fifth Avenue is closed and will not reopen. First and second floors of Bullock’s open. Third floor housewares merchandise moved into main mall until store ceiling is fixed. One set of escalators not working in mall. Bullocks’s escalators and elevators not working.
Sherman Oaks Galleria

Stores: 95.
Department stores: Two Robinsons-Mays.
Damage: Both Robinsons-Mays closed due to remodeling plans made previous to earthquake. No structural damage, but unsure when the Robinsons-Mays will open. Water damage in mall, also broken glass and cracked walls.
Status: Half of the stores opened Friday. Five more stores to open by Monday.
The Oaks

Stores: 150.
Department stores: Broadway, Bullock’s, two Robinsons-Mays, JC Penney.
Damage: Cosmetic damage.
Status: Mall open.
Topanga Plaza
6600 Topanga Canyon Blvd. Canoga Park

Stores: 150.
Department stores: Nordstrom, Robinsons-May, Broadway, Montgomery Ward.
Damage: Nordstrom closed for a few weeks due to damage to facade. Moderate structural damage to Robinsons-May, Broadway, Montgomery Ward. Superficial damage to mall.
Status: Seventy percent of stores opened Friday. Robinsons-May, Broadway and Montgomery Ward will reopen in three to six months. Damage estimate, not including the department stores, is expected to reach $1.5 million.
Valencia Town Center

Damage: Minor cracks in walls, tiles, parking lot
Status: All stores open.
