Red Adair Retires, Sells Firefighting Company: The most public of the Texas oil well firefighters has sold his Red Adair Co. to Lafayette, La.-based Global Industries Ltd., an oil production services company, for an undisclosed price. Adair, 78, said his 12-member staff will remain in Houston and continue with Global Industries, retaining the Red Adair name. Adair revolutionized the practice of controlling oil fires by introducing explosives and by drilling deep underground to cap the wells and deprive fires of fuel.
