Hong Kong — HURRAY FOR: Hollywood in Hong Kong?
Three years before this British dependency is to revert to Chinese rule, it is about to get a large dose of U.S.-style movie mania with the opening sometime this year of a Planet Hollywood restaurant. The chain, owned by movie stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone and Bruce Willis, features a film memorabilia motif and already includes seven other restaurants in the United States, Britain and Mexico.
The Hong Kong outlet is just one part of a massive strategic plan aimed at turning Canton Road, located within a 3 1/2-square-mile shopping area at the tip of the colony’s Kowloon Peninsula, into something like New York’s West 57th Street.
Hotel Properties Ltd., the Singapore-based firm which holds the franchise for Planet Hollywood, also plans to open a Hard Rock Cafe on Canton Road sometime next year.
