Mervyn’s to Lay Off Warehouse Workers: The Hayward-based discounter, a unit of Dayton-Hudson Corp., said as many as 135 of its 450 warehouse workers in Hayward and Fremont would lose their jobs after the winter holidays, along with smaller numbers of employees at distribution centers in Ontario, Calif., and Salt Lake City. Spokeswoman Kathy Blackburn said smaller inventories and more efficiency in handling merchandise means fewer workers are needed. Some of the workers may be called back within six months, she said.
