AIDS Researcher’s Hearing Postponed

WASHINGTON — Monday’s scheduled public hearing to review misconduct charges against famed AIDS researcher Dr. Robert C. Gallo has been postponed, the Department of Health and Human Services said Friday.
The Office of Research Integrity, which brought misconduct charges against Gallo, asked for the delay after a review board at Health and Human Services concluded Thursday that a scientist in Gallo’s lab was innocent of similar charges.
The agency said the review board’s rejection of its case against Dr. Mikulas Popovic “may have significant implications” in the case against Gallo. The Gallo hearing will be delayed until at least Nov. 15.
Gallo and Popovic were accused of making false statements in a pioneering AIDS study published in the journal Science in 1984.
