Youth Killed, 13 Hurt in Pickup That Overturned
DALY CITY, Calif. — A pickup truck carrying 14 young people, most of them in the truck bed, overturned Sunday, killing one teen-ager. The driver was arrested, the California Highway Patrol said.
The 16-year-old who died was in the back of the half-ton pickup when the vehicle started to swerve, witnesses told the CHP. Eleven youths in the back were ejected, the CHP said. In all, 13 youths were injured.
In a statement, the CHP noted that a law taking effect next year will make it illegal to ride in the back of a pickup without a seat belt.
The driver, who was arrested on charges of manslaughter and reckless driving resulting in injury and or death, wore a seat belt and sustained only minor injuries.
