Amdahl to Cut Payrolls by 10%: The Sunnyvale corporation, hurt by stagnation in the mainframe computer market, said it will lay off at least 10% of its work force and report its third straight quarterly loss. The mainframe manufacturer has 7,400 employees worldwide. Amdahl said it expects to report a loss for the quarter ended Sept. 24. The company didn’t specify the loss, but said it would exceed the $23.7 million lost in the second quarter. Amdahl also said it would take a significant restructuring charge for the third quarter. The job cuts will be the third round of layoffs at Amdahl this year. Amdahl has already cut its work force by 2,000.
