REGIONAL ROUNDUP : North Carolina Nearly Lets Victory Get Away
Scoring has been a relative breeze for 15th-ranked North Carolina. Keeping the other team off the scoreboard hasn’t been so easy.
The Tar Heels posted a 45-35 victory over Wake Forest Saturday at Chapel Hills N.C., but gave up 22 points in the fourth quarter to make a rout interesting.
North Carolina tailback Curtis Johnson rushed for 132 yards in 15 carries, including a 17-yard burst for a touchdown midway through the second quarter and a 75-yard dash on the first play of the second half for his second score. Johnson went five yards for his third touchdown late in the third quarter.
The Tar Heels’ other tailback, Leon Johnson, had a seven-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter and finished with 119 yards in 16 carries for the Tar Heels, 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Wake Forest is 1-4, 0-2.
Clemson 13, Duke 10--Nelson Welch kicked a tie-breaking 27-yard field goal in the third quarter and the Tigers stopped several Blue Devil drives late in the game at Durham, N.C.
The Tigers extended Duke’s losing streak against ACC opponents to 16. Clemson (4-1, 3-1) has won four in a row over Duke (1-5, 0-3) and 12 of the last 13.
Georgia Tech 38, Maryland 0--William Bell rushed for 131 yards and Dorsey Levens had 130 to lead the Yellow Jackets (2-3, 1-3) over the Terrapins (0-6, 0-3) in an ACC game at Atlanta.

Steve Mathews completed 15 of 20 passes for 197 yards to lead Memphis State (4-2) to a 45-3 victory over Arkansas State (1-5). . . . Jake Delhomme threw three touchdown passes to Marcus Carter, a transfer from LSU, to lead Southwestern Louisiana (3-2) to a 36-15 victory over Tulane (2-4) at New Orleans.
EAST
Brad Stramanak scored three touchdowns, all on one-yard runs, as Navy (3-2) rallied for a 24-24 victory over Air Force (1-5) at Annapolis, Md. Stramanak’s final two scores came in the fourth quarter, when Navy overcame a 24-14 deficit. Stramanak has eight touchdowns in Navy’s last four games. . . . . Jim McGeehan passed for 298 yards and three touchdowns to lead Penn (4-0) to a 30-12 victory over Colgate (2-3) at Hamilton, N.Y. . . . Keith Elias ran for 206 yards and two touchdowns to lead Princeton (4-0, 2-0) to an Ivy League victory over Brown (1-3, 1-1) at Providence, R.I. . . . Bill Lazor passed for one touchdown and ran for another to lead Cornell (1-3, 1-1) to a 27-0 victory over Harvard (2-2, 1-1) at Ithaca, N.Y. Lazor has 4,871 total yards in his three-year career, which breaks the school record of 4,715, set by Ed Marinaro, a running back from 1969-71. . . . Steve Mills broke away from three tackles and completed a 22-yard touchdown pass to Dave Iwan as Yale (1-4) recorded a 31-27 victory over Holy Cross (1-4) at Worcester, Mass. . . . Jarrett Shine scored two touchdowns in Lafayette’s 28-point first quarter and the Leopards (3-2) routed Columbia (1-3), 58-6, at New York.
WEST
Colorado State 34, Fresno State 32--E.J. Watson gained 210 yards in 35 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead the Rams to a Western Athletic Conference victory at Fort Collins, Colo.
After Colorado State (2-4, 2-1) went ahead, 34-24, Fresno State (3-2, 1-1) cut it to 34-32 with 1:46 to play on Ron Rivers’ two-yard scoring run and a two-point conversion pass.

Joe Hughes completed 26 of 42 passes for 422 yards and three touchdowns and dove in for the winning score with less than a minute left as Wyoming (5-1, 3-0) notched a 33-26 WAC victory over Texas El Paso (1-5, 0-2). . . . Stoney Case threw four touchdown passes and ran in the winning score with 3:25 left as New Mexico (3-3, 2-2) recorded its third consecutive victory, rallying to beat Utah, 42-35, at Salt Lake City. Utah fell to 0-2, 2-4. . . . Cody Ledbetter passed for 380 yards and two touchdowns to lead New Mexico State (3-2, 2-0) to a 24-17 WAC victory over Northern Illinois at Las Cruces, N.M. Northern Illinois’ LeShon Johnson rushed for 238 yards in 36 carries. . . . Shaun Grove had two interceptions and Josh Branen ran for two touchdowns to lead the University of San Diego (3-2) to a 27-21 victory over Cal Lutheran (3-2) at Thousand Oaks.
