SOUTH-CENTRAL : Job-Training Center Taking Applications
Applications are being accepted at the Opportunities Industrialization Centers of America’s new training center at 11100 S. Western Ave.
The $1.3-million center, which opened last month, will offer classes in retail sales, office and occupational training, and culinary training. Classes are free to those who qualify as low-income applicants and unemployed applicants.
“The goal of OIC is to have individuals trained and ready for jobs as they become available,” said Hank Clemons, executive director of the Los Angeles center. “A partnership exists between companies such as Chevron, Mobil and others so that as job opportunity become available, individuals will be trained through OIC to fill some of those vacancies.”
Plans to expand the center’s program from a basic-skills training center to job training began in 1990, Clemons said.
OIC, established in 1964, has more than 70 chapters nationwide.
The center is raising funds to renovate its building, which once housed an AT&T; telecommunications center, Clemons said. The center was formerly at 2112 S. La Brea Ave.
