FOOTBALL : Belmont Wins, 13-7, in Final Seconds
Dale Saulque threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Giovanni Morales with 22 seconds left to give undefeated Belmont High a 13-7 victory over Verdugo Hills in a Northern Conference game Friday.
Belmont trounced Verdugo Hills, 35-7, last season, but the Sentinels had to drive 62 yards in seven plays in the final 3 1/2 minutes to defeat the host Dons.
Morales, a 5-foot-9, 122-pound senior, failed to catch a pass during the first 44 minutes of play, but he had three receptions for 47 yards during the final drive.
His first catch measured 17 yards and gave the Sentinels a first down at the Verdugo Hills 45-yard line. His second was good for 12 yards and gave Belmont a first down at the Don 15.
After Saulque was dropped for a three-yard loss, Morales made a sliding grab in the end zone for the touchdown.
Saulque completed nine of 23 passes for 137 yards during the game.
Records: Belmont 5-0; Verdugo Hills 1-4.
