SANTA FE SPRINGS : Refinery Fire Causes $300,000 in Damage
- Share via
A spectacular early morning fire at a Santa Fe Springs oil refinery Friday caused nearly $300,000 in damage and left two employees with minor burns, fire officials said.
The three-alarm fire at the Powerine Oil Refinery lasted for more than an hour and drew firefighters from six surrounding cities, Spanta Fe Springs Battalion Chief Lyndell Emrick said.
The fire began about 12:50 a.m. as refinery employees were working on a pipe in the coker unit that contained crude oil, Emrick said. The pipe sprang a leak and the oil was ignited by an unknown source, he said.
Emrick said the refinery employees reported seeing a flash just as the fire broke out.
