* 1977: Menachem Begin becomes prime minister. Egyptian President Anwar Sadat goes to Jerusalem.
* 1978: In September, negotiations at Camp David lay the groundwork for a 1979 peace treaty between Egypt and Israel. Under the treaty Israel agrees to return the Sinai to Egypt. Withdrawal is completed in 1982.
* 1982: In June, Israel invades Lebanon to eliminate Palestinian guerrilla bases. Siege of Beirut. U.S. mediation results in the PLO moving its headquarters to Tunis, Tunisia. Israeli Army withdraws to South Lebanon.
* 1987: In December, Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and West Bank launch intifada (uprising) against Israeli occupation.
* 1988: Arafat accepts Israel’s right to exist. U.S. begins dialogue with the PLO.
* 1991: In January, Iraq attacks with Israel with ground-to-ground missiles during Persian Gulf War. PLO and Jordan side with Iraq during the war.
On Oct. 30, peace talks begin in Madrid under U.S.-Soviet auspices. It marks the first time Israel has attended a conference with the Palestinians.
