Ventura 22, Simi Valley 21--Alfonso Camarillo blocked Tim Wolleck’s 37-yard field-goal attempt with seven seconds to play to preserve the victory at Ventura High.
The Cougars had taken the lead with two minutes to play on running back Aaron Davis’ one-yard scoring run and quarterback Erik Olson’s two-point conversion run.
Wolleck earlier missed a 42-yard field goal in the third quarter which would have given the Pioneers a 17-14 lead.
Simi Valley had taken a 21-14 lead with nine minutes to play when Jevon Markarian scored from one yard.
The Pioneers took a 14-0 first-quarter lead when senior Jeremie Watkins, who completed 11 of 28 passes for 203 yards, connected with Ken Huggins (five receptions, 116 yards) on a 59-yard touchdown pass play with 8:53 left in the first half. Four minutes later Watkins hit John Washington with a 15-yard scoring pass.
Ventura tied the score in the second quarter when Olson connected with Ramsey Jay on a six-yard pass midway through the quarter and Camarillo broke off a 27-yard touchdown run.
