BUENA PARK — Defending Division VIII champion La Mirada got a 230-yard, three-touchdown performance from Ryan Hura Friday night and held on to beat defending Division VII champion Sunny Hills, 28-27, at Buena Park High.
A missed extra point with 6 minutes 2 seconds left in the fourth quarter was the difference in the game. Doug Choe pushed the kick to the right and the Lancers ended up a point short.
Sunny Hills (0-1) matched the Matadors touchdown for touchdown. Quarterback Brad Knyal completed seven of 11 passes for 193 yards and two touchdowns and running back Henry Naliielua ran for 71 yards and one touchdown.
La Mirada (1-0) struck first with a 65-yard drive that consumed the first seven minutes of the opening quarter and ended on a nine-yard run by Hura.
Lancer receiver Craig Borsari proved to be a key for Sunny Hills. Three times on third down and once on fourth down, Borsari caught passes, two of which resulted in touchdowns and one that extended a drive that resulted in a touchdown.
Borsari finished with six receptions for 179 yards.
