Customs Service Veteran Will Direct U.S. Part of Interpol

WASHINGTON — Shelley Altenstadter, a 44-year-old veteran of the U.S. Customs Service, was named Thursday to direct the U.S. component of Interpol, the international law enforcement agency.
Altenstadter will be the chief of the U.S. National Central Bureau. The bureau represents the United States in Interpol, which promotes cooperation among law enforcement officials around the world.
For the past four years, she has been deputy director of the Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. From 1987 to 1989, she was director of the Customs Service’s office of commercial fraud enforcement. She started with the Customs Service in 1975 as an inspector in San Ysidro, Calif.
The appointment was announced jointly by Treasury Secretary Lloyd Bentsen and Atty. Gen. Janet Reno. The office Altenstadter heads is a component of the Justice Department but, by agreement, the selection of the position alternates between Treasury and Justice.
