Jessica Shapiro of Granada Hills High made a verbal commitment to play softball for Arizona State. Shapiro, a pitcher who will begin her senior year next week, will sign a letter of intent during the early signing period in November.
The Southern California Stealth, a girls’ 18-and-under Amateur Softball Assn. team, won the Mission Viejo Summer Classic tournament last weekend.
Football
Crespi junior receiver Wayne Emerson, who led the team with 31 catches for 511 yards last season, will miss six to 10 weeks because of a stress fracture in his right foot.
Baseball
Grant High hired Jeremy Lawrence, the Lancers’ junior varsity coach the past two seasons, to replace David O’Ravez as the baseball coach.
Lawrence, 28, is the third baseball coach in as many years. O’Ravez resigned in early August, citing a desire to move out of Los Angeles. O’Ravez replaced longtime Lancer Coach Tom Lucero, who moved to Virginia.
Miscellany
Ken Lynch and Kathy Blake of Cal State Northridge were selected athletes of the month for May by the Northridge Athletic Council, which consists of student-athletes representing each of the Matadors’ 18 sports.
Lynch, who was a major force in the Matadors’ drive to the NCAA championship game in volleyball, where CSUN lost to UCLA, ranks in every top 10 category of the Matador career leaders list.
Blake, who helped lead the Matadors to their first NCAA Division I Softball College World Series appearance in May, posted a 22-3 pitching record.
