CSUN Sluggers Take Swing at Olympics
Beth Calcante and Scia Maumausolo, Cal State Northridge’s top sluggers, are among 110 players taking part in the Amateur Softball Assn. USA National Team Camp beginning today in Oklahoma City.
It is the second stage of tryouts leading up to the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, where softball will be a medal sport for the first time.
Calcante, a senior outfielder, and Maumausolo, a sophomore catcher and designated hitter, were All-American selections last spring.
Calcante led the Matadors with a .343 batting average, 61 hits, 33 runs, 12 home runs and 51 runs batted in. Maumausolo finished her freshman campaign with a .307 batting average, five doubles, three triples, seven home runs and 28 RBIs.
Former Northridge players Lisa Erickson (1990), Barbara Jordan (‘86), Beth Onestinghel (‘88) and Priscilla Rouse (‘87) also received invitations to the camp.
