LOS ANGELES : Video Camera Test OKd for 7 LAPD Patrol Cars

The Los Angeles Police Commission has approved the installation of mounted video cameras in seven patrol cars as part of a three-month pilot program aimed at documenting arrests.
The $68,000 program, which must get final approval from the City Council, was proposed by the Independent Commission on the Los Angeles Police Department as a method to reduce claims of excessive force.
The system is similar to a program used by the California Highway Patrol, which provides officers with remote microphones and has cameras next to rear-view mirrors.
Lt. Dan Koenig said the system works well when the action being recorded is on a freeway in front of a patrol car, but it has yet to be tested on city streets. “We’ll see how it works,” he said.
