Northridge Gets Good News on 5 Football Players

Bob Burt wore the smile of the Cheshire cat on Friday afternoon. Not only is Robert Trice, his top returning offensive player, expected in camp today, three of his best defensive players are academically eligible.

Burt, the Cal State Northridge football coach, spoke with Trice Friday morning and was assured that Trice’s transportation problems have been resolved. The senior tailback, who gained 478 yards in 106 carries last season, is traveling from North Carolina.

Burt also learned that linebacker Ivy Calvin and defensive linemen Victor Myles and Otis Wilson passed summer school classes.

Calvin, a Division I-AA preseason All-American, made a team-high 99 tackles last season.

Myles, an All-Western Football Conference second-team selection, led the team with 10 quarterback hurries last season and was in on 59 tackles, 33 solo. Wilson is a 6-foot-3, 282-pound transfer from Rancho Santiago College.

“Those three particularly would have been very difficult to replace,” Burt said.

Offensive lineman Mike Sanders, who has a heart murmur, was given medical clearance to practice. He was held out of Thursday’s drills because of extra testing.
