The City Council has approved adding two more sheriff’s deputies to patrol the city and provide outreach services to schools and local youths.
The city, which contracts with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department to provide police services, will pay about $166,000 a year for the two new officers.
“The deputies will provide specialized enforcement services and participate in neighborhood preservation efforts,” said City Manager George Scarborough.
Those efforts, he said, could include increased patrols in areas with gang or drug activity and drug education in schools.
The addition of the two deputies is the only increase in expenditures the city is making this year, Scarborough said.
