First-Time Jobless Claims Drop by 60,000: The number of Americans filing for unemployment compensation fell, even though more flood victims showed up at claims offices. The Labor Department reported that the number of new claims dropped to 336,000 last week, down from 396,000 in the previous week. Economists noted that the previous week’s numbers had been skewed by a temporary shutdown at GM for retooling.
