PITTSBURGH — A 9-year-old Washington state child survived a 13-hour, five-organ transplant operation and was in critical condition at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Friday, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Ryan Elledge of Deer Park, Wash., became one of fewer than 15 people worldwide, six of them children, to be recipients in “multi-visceral” transplants, officials said.
He received a stomach, pancreas, liver, small intestine and large intestine during the procedure Thursday.
A “critical” listing is normal immediately after transplant operations.
