Library’s Resources Are Worth Saving

* I am one of many citizens extremely distressed about budget cuts (44% staff hours and 75% book budget) at the Orange County Public Library.

Although I am mainly concerned about the Dana Niguel branch, my remarks relate to the other 26 branches. They all offer endless resources. The summer reading club for children has been given much publicity, and hundreds of children have signed up. Our branch is closed on Fridays and Saturdays, and those may be the only days parents can bring them to the library. Many library patrons depend on reports of stock markets and investments; others use references for employment and establishing a new business; and retired citizens rely on the library for recreational reading.

I realize that other agencies have a shortage of funds and that services are being cut. However, since Orange County has completely supported and maintained these branch libraries, is there any way some local financial support could be given? Other cities are building new libraries with local funding.
