LOS ANGELES : $19 Million in Couple’s Assets Frozen in Fraud Case
A judge Friday froze $4 million in bank accounts and $15 million in property held by a Beverly Hills physician and his ex-wife who are named in an alleged $50-million workers’ compensation fraud case.
The accounts of Dr. Mark Kaplan, 53, and Polina Ioffe, 48, are held in 10 financial institutions, and the 18 properties are in Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino and Santa Barbara counties. They include Kaplan’s Beverly Hills mansion, commercial buildings, rental units, personal homes and vacation retreats, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Rebecca Noblin.
Kaplan, Ioffe and nine other people were charged Tuesday with running a scheme in which they allegedly persuaded unemployed workers to file phony workers’ compensation claims against their former employers.
The Kaplan assets were frozen under a civil action alleging unfair business practices. They will be used to reimburse victims--in this case employers--should the pair be convicted, prosecutors said.
