WORLD IN BRIEF : ANGOLA : U.N. Aid Flights Halted After Attack
- Share via
The United Nations has again suspended Angolan aid flights after UNITA rebels fired on a U.N.-chartered aircraft carrying supplies in the northwest. A World Food Program official in South Africa said there will be no more flights until UNITA guarantees safe passage. About 40 bullets hit the plane as it tried to land at M’banza Congo, a town in UNITA hands. The aircraft limped back to base with one engine on fire. Dozens of Angolan towns have been cut off since UNITA leader Jonas Savimbi rejected defeat in September’s multi-party election and restarted his 16-year conflict with the government in Luanda.
