SAN FERNANDO VALLEY : 2 Medflies Found 8 Miles Outside Quarantine Area

Two Mediterranean fruit flies have been found in the Granada Hills/Mission Hills area, about eight miles outside a Medfly quarantine area, a spokesman said Thursday.
Medfly Cooperative Project crews found a mature, unmated female near Tuba Street and Gaviota Avenue, said spokesman Larry Hawkins. Another fly was found 1 1/2 miles away at Index Street and Dempsey Avenue, Hawkins said. The Medflies were the first found since three were trapped in Walnut Park on Dec. 8.
