Unocal, 6 Workers Charged in Leak

Charges were filed Friday against Unocal and six oil company employees for an ongoing leak of petroleum byproducts into the ocean and ground water near Santa Maria, the San Luis Obispo County district attorney’s office announced Friday.
The 23-count complaint also alleges that the company and employees failed to report the leaks at its refinery near Santa Maria. The district attorney did not disclose further details or the names of the individuals charged.
Unocal said it would not have a copy of the complaint until Monday.
The state Department of Fish and Game and San Luis Obispo County authorities have been investigating the leaking diluent for several months and have twice seized records from Unocal offices.
