BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJORS : Smiley May Be Out for Year
The Cincinnati Reds placed left-hander John Smiley on the 15-day disabled list Saturday after X-rays revealed a bone spur in his pitching elbow. The Reds said his season would be over if he needs surgery. . . . Montreal’s Ken Hill, who won his first six decisions this season but has been bothered by a pulled groin muscle since late May, was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Expos retroactive to June 26. . . . The Philadelphia Phillies traded relief pitcher Tim Mauser to the San Diego Padres in exchange for reliever Roger Mason. The Phillies also placed infielder Mariano Duncan on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring. . . . Bret Saberhagen of the New York Mets will miss his scheduled start Monday against San Diego because of a strained right elbow.
