BALDWIN HILLS : Free Saturday Reading Workshops
A free storytelling workshop for children 5 to 11 will begin Saturday at the Jim Gilliam Recreation Center, 4000 S. La Brea Ave. Workshops are scheduled from 2 to 5 p.m. each Saturday for 12 weeks.
The classes, conducted by storyteller and performer Marilyn McConnie, will incorporate storytelling with reading, writing, dancing, acting and music. McConnie said the workshop is designed to expose children to elements of different cultures and traditions as well as build self-esteem through artistic expression.
The workshops will culminate in a final performance and awards ceremony Oct. 2.
The program is being funded by a grant from the Arts Recovery Fund, a collaborative effort of the city’s Cultural Affairs Department, the California Community Foundation, AT & T, the Dayton Hudson Foundation and Times Mirror Corp.
