Windy Scofield

School: Laguna Hills Sport: Softball Position: Pitcher Class: Sophomore Scofield isn’t an overpowering pitcher, but because of the Hawks’ strong defense, she doesn’t need to be. Last Tuesday, she struck out only four, but pitched a one-hitter in Laguna Hills’ 1-0 victory over San Dimas in the Southern Section Division III semifinals. Scofield allowed only one runner on a single to right with two outs in the fourth inning, despite a chronic back problem that had her wincing after some pitches. “She’s putting the ball in real good locations and that’s allowing us to play good defense and have a really good time,” Laguna Hills Coach Cary Crouch said. “She was just totally under control.” In four playoff victories, Scofield has pitched a four-hitter, three-hitter, two-hitter and one-hitter entering the championship game Wednesday against Irvine.
Other top performers: * Tina Bowman, Misty May and Michaela Ross, Newport Harbor high jumpers, each qualified for the finals in the track and field preliminaries. Bowman and May each cleared 5-6 and Ross had a mark of 5-4. * Ocean View’s Christie Engesser won her 800-meter heat at the State track and field preliminaries finishing in 2 minutes 14.92 seconds. * Rebecca Smith pitched a two-hit shutout and drove in a run in Irvine’s 3-0 victory over North Torrance in the Division III semifinals.
