- Share via
* Today’s schedule: Division II finals: No. 1 North Hollywood Harvard Westlake (17-2) vs. No. 2 Sunny Hills (21-0) at Sunny Hills Racquet Club, 3 p.m.
* Last year’s final: San Marino d. Esperanza, 13-5
* Outlook: Sunny Hills Coach Steve White says he’s essentially conceding three points to Harvard Westlake’s Phillip Tseng in singles, but he still expects his team to win the match. “I just hope our depth will pull us through. I think we’ll get the 11 (points).” White is counting on five or six points from singles players Joseph Gilbert, Kevin Kim and Dave Robbins and another five or six from his three doubles teams. Gilbert and Robbins played doubles in the section individual tournament and lost in the finals to top-seeded Nathan Jackmon and Jason Merrin of Santa Barbara, 7-5, 7-5. Harvard Westlake’s J.W. Hobson and Aaron Cohen reached the quarterfinals in that tournament but both might play singles today. Tseng lost in the semifinals of the singles individual tournament to Santa Barbara’s Alex DeCret, the eventual champion, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5. Harvard Westlake and Sunny Hills won their semifinal matches, 13-5, over Redlands and Trabuco Hills. In four playoff matches, Harvard Westlake has lost 14 sets; Sunny Hills has dropped only six. Sunny Hills is trying to win its second Division II title in three years. It beat San Marino in the 1991 finals. Robbins and doubles players Jason Nevadomsky and Danny Lee remain from the 1991 team.
