World IN BRIEF : BRITAIN : Earth Summit Vows Broken, Group Says

Nations have failed to act on promises made during the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro a year ago, the World Wide Fund for Nature said in London. Virtually none of the pledged money has been provided to save forests, prevent “global warming” or protect endangered species, and some nations, notably Britain, are blocking efforts to get on with the work scheduled at the summit, the group said. “Here you have this agreement signed out of the biggest conference there’s ever been, and yet a year later there is very little to show for it,” said Barry Coates, an official of the group.
