* * * The Fall, “The Infotainment Scan,” Matador/Atlantic. Since their start in 1979, these indie icons have remained intriguingly offbeat and consistently cool. The new one ranks with their best. The English quartet’s edgy, nerve-damaged sound bristles with tense, steady guitar and crackling, sharp beats. Mark E. Smith’s disturbed vocals and bumpy delivery add more texture while his bizarre and humorous lyrics scare off possible pretentiousness.
New albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor), two stars (fair), three stars (good) and four stars (excellent).
