Three Are Sworn In as Top Aides to Reno
WASHINGTON — Three top aides to Atty. Gen. Janet Reno were sworn in Friday hours after the Senate confirmed their nominations.
The three were Philip B. Heymann as deputy attorney general, Webster Hubbell as associate attorney general and Drew Days III as solicitor general.
Their confirmation hearings were held last week, and the Senate Judiciary Committee approved the nominations Thursday.
In the Senate, all three were approved by voice vote. Heymann headed the department’s criminal division and Days the civil rights division during the Jimmy Carter Administration.
Hubbell’s nomination ran into some controversy before the Judiciary Committee, because of his membership in an almost all-white country club in Little Rock, Ark. Hubbell, a close friend of President Clinton, resigned from the club.
