VENICE : 9 Traffic Officers Added to Weekend Beach Patrol

The Los Angeles City Council, declaring what everybody knew all along, has deemed Venice Beach to be a “special event.” The measure is aimed at preventing violence from breaking out amid the hordes of weekend visitors to the famous boardwalk over the Memorial Day weekend.
The “special event” designation, in effect Sunday and Monday from 2:30 to 7:30 p.m., will bring with it nine city traffic control officers, freeing police officers for law enforcement. The council will decide today whether to extend the designation to include every Sunday through Sept. 26. “There has been a problem building on Sunday afternoons for a long time,” said Councilwoman Ruth Galanter, who is pushing the plan.
Police closed the boardwalk May 16 after a fight between rival gang members turned into a melee.
