Ralphs Profit Rises: Ralphs Grocery Co. said first-quarter profit rose 77% to $3.9 million despite a 6.6% drop in sales. The Compton-based supermarket chain earned $2.2 million in the same period of 1992. It credited the profit gain on a cost savings program, a mix of higher margin products and savings from a new Perishables Service Center. The company said the recession trimmed sales to $632.4 million.
